GOV 102 Spring 2017 Final Exam

Read this short story by Hanif Kureishi, “My Son the Fanatic, ” Also read this news article on Pope Francis and his criticisms of modern society.

In a conversation between Parvez the taxi driver and his son, Ali, Parvez says: “‘I love England….They let you do almost anything here.” Ali, replies: “That is the problem”.

Answer the following questions in roughly 1000 words. Integrate your answers into a single essay, don’t answer the questions separately.

  1. What are Ali’s criticisms of modern British society, and his criticisms of his father?
  2. Are there any similarities between these criticisms and those Pope Francis makes of modern western society in general?
  3. In light of what you learned from the documentary we saw on the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), are you sympathetic to Ali’s point of view?
  4. How do you understand the end of the story? Who is the fanatic?
